Rack and Tent may be paid through affiliate links to stores. As of November 7, 2026, no affiliate program has accepted the site yet; Canyon, Grizzly and Overland Kitted links never carry a commission. The order is by price, never by commission. Affiliate disclosure.
A rotomolded cooler is the other big-ticket item on most overland trips. We read 12 hard coolers of 45 quarts and up from Engel, Bison, Canyon and Grizzly on November 7, 2026, with Canyon models also at Overland Kitted. Electric 12V fridges are a different product with a power budget of their own; they are not in this list.

How we compare: criteria, sources and dates
What to compare
- Price per published quart [calc: price / quarts], because names are not sizes: Engel's 65 is published at 58 quarts, Canyon's PRO 65 at 66.
- Empty weight, if you lift it in and out of a truck bed or put it on a rack: from 24 lb (Engel 50 and 65) to 41 lb (Canyon PRO 65) as published. Bison publishes no empty weight for its 50 and 75 qt models.
- Outside size against the space behind the seats or in the bed. Measure before you buy; the published outside dimensions are in the table.
- Ice claims are the makers' words, not test results: Engel's "Up to 10 days", Canyon's "4 to 7 days depending on environmental conditions".
On the rack? A full cooler is heavy: add its empty weight and its contents to the "other roof gear" in Will my roof carry it? before strapping it next to a tent. And tie it down as the rack and cooler makers say: Grizzly mentions "tie-down slots", and Engel lists cooler slides as a separate product in its catalog.
Programs
Engel Coolers and Bison Coolers run programs on AvantLink (15% on their program pages); Canyon and Grizzly showed no program we could join. None has accepted us yet, and the picks above follow the written rules only. The tents that go with the cooler: the rooftop tent comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Are the quart sizes comparable between brands?
Not always. Canyon writes that its PRO 45 "holds a true 45 quarts" and its PRO 65 is "66 qt", and Engel's 65 is published at "58 Qts". We list the capacity each maker publishes for the model and compute the price per published quart; we have not measured any cooler.
How long do these coolers keep ice?
We publish the makers' own claims only: Engel says "Up to 10 days Ice Retention", Canyon says the Outfitter 55 "Keeps ice solid for 4 to 7 days depending on environmental conditions". Ice life depends on heat, sun, how full the cooler is and how often it is opened; we have not tested it.
Does a cooler count against my roof rating?
Only if it rides on the roof. Most overlanders carry the cooler inside or on a bed rack; if yours goes on the rack, add its empty weight plus its contents in Will my roof carry it?
Why no YETI or RTIC?
YETI's own store and RTIC's catalog did not answer our reader on November 7, 2026 (errors 403 and 404), and the one YETI Tundra 45 listing we found at a retailer did not load. We list what we could read with a price and a published capacity.
