A soft shell is canvas under a vinyl cover that folds out past the side or the back of the vehicle; a hard shell is a rigid lid (ABS, aluminum, fiberglass or composite) that lifts as a clamshell, a wedge or a pop-up, or opens out like a fold-out. We read 9 soft shells and 37 hard shells on November 7, 2026. Here is what their makers publish, put side by side.

How we compare: criteria, sources and dates

Median published weight: 122 lb for soft shells, 180 lb for hard shells; median lowest seller price: $1,799.99 and $2,995 [calc]. The two groups are not the same size and brands are not spread evenly across them: read the comparison row by row, not only the medians.

What the shell changes, in published figures

Either shell, the same limits. The tent, the rack and everything on it stay within the dynamic ratings of your roof and rack while driving and within the static rating when parked with people inside. A hard shell's lid is not a cargo deck unless its maker says so and gives a figure (iKamper: "The BDV has a weight load of 110 lbs (50 kg)"; ARB Altitude, at Overland Kitted: "Integrated t-slot rails, rated 44 lb"). Close any tent in strong wind.

Our take

If your roof rating is low, start with the weight column, not the shell. If you park in a garage or care about the packed height, the hard shells in our list win on the published figures. If you want the longest bed for the least money, the soft shell fold-outs did on November 7, 2026. Every tent and every seller's price: the rooftop tent comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Is a hard shell rooftop tent lighter or heavier?

In our list, heavier on average: the median published weight is higher for hard shells than for soft shells (see the table). The range overlaps a lot, though: the lightest hard shell we read weighs less than several soft shells. Check the tent you want, not the category.

Which is lower when closed?

Hard shells, by a wide margin in our list: the lowest published closed heights are all hard shells (Naturnest Polaris Aero at 4.3 in, Cascadia Cirrus at 4.75 in for the tent body only, Yakima SkyPeak HD at 6.5 in). The soft shells we read pack to 9 to 16.5 in.

Which gives more bed for the money?

Soft shell fold-outs, on our check date: the longest beds (94 to 96 in) are fold-out soft shells or the large Roofnest Condor 2 XXL Air, and the cheapest tent in our list is a soft shell. A fold-out also hangs over the side of the vehicle, which needs a ladder and room to open.

What is a hybrid?

A hard top over a fold-out floor, like the iKamper X-Cover 3.0 (128 lb, 11 in closed, bed 89.25 x 69 in, out of stock on our check date). It is the only hybrid in our list.
