Every rooftop tent we read mounts on crossbars or a platform rack. The rack has to do three things: carry the tent's weight while you drive, sit within the tent's crossbar range, and leave the vehicle roof within its own rating once the rack's weight is added. This page gathers what tent makers ask for, what rack sellers publish, and what the awnings that often share the rack weigh.
What tent makers ask of the rack
- A dynamic rating at least equal to the tent. Naturnest: "The crossbar weight capacity (DWC - the weight the rack can actually carry while the vehicle is in motion) of the roof rack must be at least equal to the weight of the tent." ROAM asks for "a dynamic weight rating of 150lbs" (Vagabond 2.0) and 170 lb (XL); iKamper for 140, 155 and 185 lb (Skycamp 4.0 Duo, Trio and Quad), for the roof and the rack.
- A crossbar spread inside the tent's range. iKamper: "Crossbar Distance Range 22" - 41"" (Skycamp 4.0 Duo) and "32″-48″" (BDV Duo); Yakima: "Minimum Crossbar Spread 26.00in" and "Maximum Crossbar Spread 40.00in" (SkyRise SL); Roofnest: "Min. Crossbar Spread: 28"" (Meadowlark 2 XL).
- Bar size that fits the mounting hardware. ARB, in Trail Recon's listing of the first Esperance: "Your roof rack and crossbars MUST have a load limit over 165 lbs. Your cross bars MUST be at least 2.49 ft apart and your height less than 1.57 in."
- The roof's rating on top of it. Rhino-Rack, in Trail Recon's listing of its soft shell: "The vehicle roof must have a load rating higher than the combined weight of the tent and any mounted accessories, and a static load limit that supports the tent in use."

How we compare: criteria, sources and dates
The Bronco rows show why the lower figure counts. Racks for the 4-door Bronco are listed at 200 to 300 lb dynamic, while the seller TrailRax quotes Ford's roof figure as "Max load 110 lbs dynamic". If that is the figure in your manual, a 300 lb rack still leaves 110 lb for the rack, the tent and the gear together [calc: the lower of the two]. Before even counting the rack's own weight, only 2 (Roofnest Meadowlark at 90 lb, Naturnest Andromeda at 108.86 lb) of our tents are published at 110 lb or less.
What an awning adds
An awning bolts to the same rack and counts against both ratings. Published weights of the 6 awnings we read:
| Awning | Weight (lb) | Coverage | Sellers, cheapest first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roofnest Little Wing 270° Awning | 48.5 | 71 sq ft | $1,135.25 at Roofnest |
| Roofnest 180° Wing Awning | 49.8 | 80 sq ft | $1,135.25 at Roofnest |
| Roofnest Big Wing 270° Awning | 59.5 | 115 sq ft | $1,325.25 at Roofnest |
| iKamper ExoShell 270 Awning | 66 | not published | $1,950 at iKamper |
| Naturnest 270 Plus Car Awning | 67.8 | 12 m² (about 129 sq ft) [calc] | $729 at Naturnest |
| Rhino-Rack Batwing 270 Freestanding Awning (driver side) | 69.9 | 132 sq ft | $1,299.99 at Trail Recon |
How we compare: criteria, sources and dates
Type the awning's weight in the "Awning, cases, boards" field of Will my roof carry it?: it comes off the room left for the tent. With a 150 lb roof and a 15 lb rack, a 48.5 lb Roofnest Little Wing 270 leaves 86.5 lb [calc], below every published tent weight in our list.
Rack safety, without a how-to. Fit the rack and the tent exactly as their manuals say, with the torque and the checks they give, and re-check fasteners when the manuals say to. Keep within the lower of your vehicle's and your rack's dynamic ratings while driving and within the static ratings when parked. Some ratings drop off-road: Putco lists "300lbs off-road dynamic" against "600lbs dynamic" on the road. Retract the awning and close the tent in strong wind.
Programs and sellers
Rhino-Rack USA and Yakima run affiliate programs on AvantLink (5% and 7% on their program pages); we have not been accepted yet, and the rack listings above are at Trail Recon and Overland Kitted, which pay us nothing. We compare tents in the rooftop tent comparison, and weights in rooftop tent weight limits.
Frequently asked questions
Is a roof rack needed for a rooftop tent?
Yes, in every listing we read: tents mount on crossbars or a platform, not on a bare roof. Roofnest puts it plainly: "All of our tents attach to the roof via standard crossbars (or platform racks), so as long as you have a good set with an adequate weight rating, you will be ready to camp." Naturnest recommends "at least 2 crossbars".
Are factory crossbars enough?
Only if their dynamic rating and the vehicle roof's rating are above the tent's weight, and if their spread fits the tent's crossbar range. Many factory bars are rated low; the manual says. When the rating is not published, no tent can be checked.
Does a platform rack carry more than crossbars?
The racks in our table publish from 175 lb (TeraFlex crossbars) to 600 lb on the road (Putco), but the vehicle roof rating does not change with the rack. A strong rack on a roof rated far lower does not let you carry more: the lower figure always counts.
What about a bed rack on a pickup?
A bed rack bypasses the cab roof, so its own rating and the truck's payload apply instead. Body Armor 4x4 lists a Tacoma bed rack at "800 lbs static and 350 lbs dynamic" at Trail Recon. The same checks apply: tent and gear under the dynamic rating, people and bedding added under the static one.
