ROAM Adventure Co. sells two soft shell fold-outs, the Vagabond 2.0 and the Vagabond XL 2.0, from its own store and through Overland Kitted. iKamper sells five hard or hybrid shells from its own store: the Skycamp 4.0 Duo, Trio and Quad, the BDV Duo wedge and the X-Cover 3.0. Here is what each maker publishes, read on November 7, 2026.

How we compare: criteria, sources and dates

Where they differ, in published figures

ROAM Vagabond

  • Soft shell fold-out: "Size (sleeping) 56” x 96” x 52”" (2.0), "72” x 96” x 52”" (XL).
  • 150 and 170 lb; ROAM asks for a rack with "a dynamic weight rating of 150lbs" and 170 lb.
  • Packs to 9 in (2.0) and 12 in (XL) high.
  • On sale on our check date: $2,040 and $2,399.20 at ROAM, against $2,550 and $2,999 at Overland Kitted.

iKamper

  • Hard shells (Skycamp 4.0, BDV) and a hybrid (X-Cover 3.0).
  • Skycamp 4.0: beds of 82.6 to 83.1 in long, all 13.75 in closed, 130 to 174 lb as we count them (top of each published range).
  • BDV Duo: 6.75 to 7 in closed, 175 lb. X-Cover 3.0: 11 in, 128 lb, out of stock on our check date.
  • No sale price; iKamper publishes "flat $249 shipping" for rooftop tents to the lower 48.

Price per published sleeping area, as a rough guide: the ROAM Vagabond 2.0 gives 56 x 96 = 5,376 sq in for $2,040, or $0.38 per sq in; the iKamper Skycamp 4.0 Duo 60.25 x 82.625 = 4,978 sq in for $4,250, or $0.85 per sq in [calc]. Sleeping area is not the only thing you buy: the hard shell's height, setup and weather protection are not in this sum.

Whichever you choose, check its weight against the lower of your roof and rack dynamic ratings with Will my roof carry it?, and mount it only as its manual says. iKamper says the tents "can be loaded and unloaded by 2-3 people".

Not set on either brand? The full comparison has 47 tents, and hard shell vs soft shell compares the two designs on every tent we read.

Frequently asked questions

Is iKamper worth the money over ROAM?

On published figures, you pay for a hard shell: every iKamper tent here has a rigid top; the BDV Duo (7 in) packs lower than both Vagabonds (9 and 12 in), the X-Cover 3.0 (11 in) lower than the XL only, and the Skycamp 4.0 models (13.75 in) pack higher than the Vagabond XL 2.0 (12 in). The Skycamp 4.0 models cost $4,250 to $4,700 against $2,040 and $2,399.20 for the two Vagabonds on sale. ROAM gives a longer bed (96 in against 82.6 to 89.25 in). Worth depends on whether the shell, the height or the bed matters more to you; we have not tested either.

Which is lighter?

As published, the iKamper X-Cover 3.0 (128 lb) and the Skycamp 4.0 Duo (130 lb, top of its range) are the lightest of the seven; the ROAM Vagabond 2.0 is 150 lb and the BDV Duo 175 lb.

Do both brands have affiliate programs?

Yes, both on AvantLink: 5% for ROAM (21-day cookie) and 6% for iKamper (21-day cookie), per their program pages. We have not been accepted by either; it changes nothing in the order of this page.
