Rack and Tent may be paid through affiliate links to stores. As of November 7, 2026, no affiliate program has accepted the site yet, and Overland Kitted and Trail Recon links never carry a commission. Picks follow a written rule, never the commission. Affiliate disclosure.
On November 7, 2026, 15 of our 47 tents cost $2,000 or less at their cheapest seller. Several were on sale against the store's own compare-at price, shown struck through. Prices change often, sales end: the date is next to every price.

How we compare: criteria, sources and dates
How to choose inside this budget
- Start with your roof. The weights here run from 90 to 185 lb as published: check them against your two ratings with Will my roof carry it?
- Then your crew and your garage, with Fits my crew and garage.
- Then the real budget. A rack, an awning or shipping can add hundreds of dollars; spread it over your nights with the cost-per-night tool.
A cheaper tent is held to the same limits. Whatever its price, the tent, the rack and the gear on them stay within your roof's and rack's dynamic ratings while driving, the static ratings when parked with people inside, and the mounting instructions in the tent's manual.
Over budget is fine for some needs: every tent and every seller is in the full comparison; tents for couples are in the best rooftop tent for 2 people.
Frequently asked questions
Can you get a hard shell rooftop tent under $2,000?
Yes, on our check date: several Naturnest and Cascadia hard shells were at $2,000 or less at their own stores, some of them on sale against a higher compare-at price. Sale prices change: check the store.
What do you give up under $2,000?
In our list, mostly the big names' hard shells and the aluminum fold-outs: no Roofnest Condor or Falcon, no iKamper and no 23ZERO tent was under $2,000 on November 7, 2026. Published weights and beds under $2,000 overlap with the dearer tents, so compare the figures, not the price band.
Does the price include a rack?
No. Every tent here needs crossbars or a platform rated for it; add the rack to the budget, and the shipping if the store charges it. The cost-per-night tool takes both.
